Somerville resident Mary Kocol, a 1993 Guggenheim Fellow in photography, says she "seeks out the turbulent within the familiar, the unsettled within the comfortable." Visitors to Venice, San Francisco and Somerville: Pictures by Mary Kocol at the Dean's Gallery at the Sloan School of Management will undoubtedly expect the "familiar" in the photographs of Somerville, but for Ms. Kocol, even "familiar places transcend their ordinary context and, for a short-lived moment, become something else."
An opening reception for the exhibition of night-time color photography will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 18 from 4:30-5:30pm at the gallery on the fourth floor of the Sloan Building (Rm E52-466).
Ms. Kocol's photographs have been seen at Boston's Gallery NAGA, Harvard's Fogg Art Museum and the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln. Her photo-animated film, I Was My Sister's Maid of Honor, premiered at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts Women Filmmakers series on September 14. Her previous film, Is This Me? won Best Animated Film at the 1995 Ann Arbor Film Festival, the 1996 Humboldt International Film/Video Festival and the 1996 Utah Short Film and Video Festival. Venice, San Francisco and Somerville: Pictures by Mary Kocol will be up through Friday, Nov. 8.
The Dean's Gallery, established in February 1994, showcases the diverse creative talents found both within the MIT community and the New England area.
