Annual MLK celebration Feb. 15

MIT's 22nd annual celebration of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., to be held on February 16, will have a new format that will combine the event's traditional elements and a year-old awards program in a single event-a breakfast hosted by President and Mrs. Charles M. Vest.

Invitations are required. They will be issued by mail in advance as requests are received. Members of the community-students, faculty and employees-may request an invitation by contacting <mlking@mit.edu> or by writing to 1996 MLK Celebration, Rm 6-014. A form for this purpose is printed with this article

The breakfast will be held in La Sala de Puerto Rico in the Student Center.

The keynote speaker will be Julius L. Chambers, a noted litigator of civil rights cases for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund for nearly two decades. He is currently chancellor of North Carolina Central University (NCCU). His theme will be "With Liberty and Justice for All." Dr. Vest and Provost Joel Moses also will speak.

Presentation of awards by the Planning Committee for the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will conclude the program. The annual awards, now in their second year, recognize a faculty member, an alumnus and a student or a student group for work that exemplifies the legacy of Dr. King.

A traditional part of MIT's celebration of the life of Dr. King, the presentation by jazz vocalist Semenya McCord and her associates of "Journey Into a Dream," a musical tribute to Martin Luther King Jr., will be held at 7pm Sunday, Feb. 18, in Kresge Auditorium.

Additional information about the MLK celebration can be found at the Web site established by the MLK Planning Committee at <http://web.mit.edu/mlking/www>.
