Garcia-Martinez named to CAES position

Professor Richard Larson, director of the Center for Advanced
Educational Services, has announced the appointment of Diana Garcia-
Martinez as director of its Advanced Study Programs (ASP), effective
April 1.

She succeeds Dr. Paul Brown, who is taking early retirement after
directing the program for many years. He will join KinetX, Inc., in
Tempe, AZ as senior advisor to the president.

Ms. Garcia-Martinez will be responsible for the management and growth of
the ASP, which provides educational programs for working engineers,
scientists, and technical staff both at MIT and through the Center's new
distance learning initiative.

To illustrate the growth opportunities being pursued by ASP, 20 ASP
part-time Fellows joined an on-campus graduate course, Management of
Technological Change, from Buenos Aires, Argentina last week. "Latin
America is one of several important growth areas for the distance
learning component of ASP," Ms. Garcia-Martinez said.

She comes to the Center from the Industrial Liaison Program where she
has been a principal liaison officer for 11 years. Before joining MIT
she worked for Dupont, Tufts University and Miles Corp. in her native
Mexico where she was also an assistant professor at the Instituto
Politecnico Nacional. She received the SM degree in biochemical
engineering from MIT in 1978.
