Furniture Exchange reports record sales, seeks donations

The MIT Student Furniture Exchange has reported record sales in recent weeks, but as a result, there is an urgent need for more donations to replenish stock.

Paula Cronin, chair of the Women's League which oversees the Exchange as a service project, announced that the Exchange sold nearly $20,000 of furniture and other household goods during back-to-school season, which significantly lowered inventory. Exchange manager Ruth Milne said dressers and desks are especially needed. Sofas, dining tables, bookcases, beds and chairs are always in demand as well. Pick-up of larger pieces can be arranged.

The Exchange relies principally on donations from the MIT community for the furniture and other household goods it sells. Donations are tax-deductible, and the Exchange provides receipts. "Since all proceeds of these sales are donated to the Women's League Scholarship Fund, we're not only helping present students to furnish rooms and apartments, but we're also making a needed contribution to scholarships for future students as well," Ms. Cronin said.

Anyone wish to donate items in good condition should call the Exchange at x3-4293. It is located at the rear of 350 Brookline St. (Building WW15).
