AIDS walk team is assembling

MIT hopes to reclaim the title of top university team in the annual AIDS Pledge Walk on Sunday, June 2. The title was lost to Harvard in 1995.

Last year, 41 members of the community registered with the MIT team and raised nearly $10,000. In its fifth year of participation, the MIT team coordinators hope to increase both the number of walkers and the amount raised.

All MIT community members planning to walk are encouraged to use the MIT Team number, 328, on their pledge forms even if they do not plan to walk with the MIT group.

"We hope the whole team will assemble at the Boston Common for a group photograph before starting the walk," said Myles Crowley, one of the MIT coordinators, who noted that the delegation usually separates into smaller groups over the course of the route.

The 10K (about six miles) walk-rain or shine-will follow a route beginning at the bandstand on Boston Common, to Coolidge Corner in Brookline, back across the BU Bridge to the Harvard Bridge and down the Esplanade, culminating with a concert at the Hatch Shell. It is the largest AIDS fundraiser in New England. Proceeds benefit the AIDS Action Committee and 29 other AIDS service providers in the eastern Massachusetts area.

Volunteers are also needed on the steering committee to help organize the team. Team coordinators are Terri Priest of the Information Center and Myles Crowley of the News Office. Others are Emily Sandberg of the Public Service Center, Amy Schrom of the Alumni/ae Association and Jill Pullen of Undergraduate Academic Affairs. For more information, pledge forms, posters and buttons, volunteers and walkers should contact the team coordinators by e-mail at or by visiting Rm 7-121 or Rm 5-111.

Preregistration for MIT walkers will be held on Friday, May 31, noon-2pm in Rm 8-119. At the pre-registration, a special drawing will be held for one pair of tickets to the musical "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" starring Donny Osmond at the Colonial Theater, Saturday, June 8 at 8pm ($140 value). Individuals who donate $50 or more or walkers who raise over $200 will be eligible to win provided they preregister.
