Stanley G. Hudson will become director of the Student Financial Aid Office on July 1, succeeding Leonard V. Gallagher, who will retire from MIT on June 30. Announcement of Mr. Hudson's appointment was made by James J. Culliton, vice president for financial operations, and Jack H. Frailey, director of the Office of Registration and Student Financial Services.
Mr. Hudson came to MIT in 1974 as associate director of UROP. He transferred to the SFAO as associate director in 1978; and in 1985 he assumed the additional responsibilities of executive officer.
Mr. Hudson received the BA degree in psychology from Springfield College; the MA in student personnel administration from Columbia University Teachers College, and the MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. During his educational years he held a variety of positions in agencies involved in educational and social services, as well as serving in Korea as a Peace Corps Volunteer.
As the SFAO's executive officer, Mr. Hudson has been jointly responsible with the director for the management of all office operations, including the execution of MIT's financial aid policies and the provision of financial aid services for undergraduate and graduate students. He has carried the primary responsibility for supervision of the Office's administrative staff, for developing the Office's computer systems, and for its frequent and extensive liaison with program auditors.
Mr. Hudson has served on the Committee for Foreign Scholarships, and he has regularly participated in the activities of the Faculty Committee on Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid. Recently Mr. Hudson completed a two-year consultation arrangement with Wellesley College, evaluating and recommending enhancements to their computerized student information system.
Mr. Hudson's participation in the MIT community has been extensive as well. He is a member of the Presidential Committee on ROTC, has been a member of MIT's Vice-Presidential Task Force on Career Development, and has served on ad hoc committees relating to undergraduate and graduate student issues. Between 1982 and 1990 he served as treasurer and then as president of the Board of Trustees of the Technology Children's Center.
Mr. Hudson is a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra's Tanglewood Festival Chorus. He and his wife Judith live with their two children in Wellesley, where they are a METCO Program Host Family.
